In 1969 Claudio Desideri made his debut with Signor Bruschino at Edimburgh Festival.
He focused his singing repertoire on Mozart’s and Rossini’s operas and he has taken
part in several important Festivals such as Salzburg, Pesaro and Glyndebourne.
Since 1973 he has regularly performed, at La Scala, in several Operas from Cenerentola to Italiana
in Algeri with the Claudio Abbado’s conduction and the Pannelle’s direction and also
Mozart’s Operas on Da Ponte’s Libretto and with Riccardo Muti’s conduction and Giorgio
His repertory ranges from Monteverdi to Nono with particulary attention on concert
activity and on lied; in the last few years he has performed the lied repertorie
of Schumann, Schubert and Brahms with Michele Campanella.
He was at the Opéra de Paris with Falstaff, at the Covent Garden in Londonwith Figaro and Don
Alfonso and also he was in New York and in Chigago for the most important roles of
Mozart and Rossini.
His recording includes Le nozze di Figaro, Così fan tutte with the Bernard Haitink’s
conduction for Emi Record Company and Il Signor Bruschino for DCG.
He has taken part in several videos (Il Barbiere di Siviglia, La cenerentola, L’elisir
d’amore, Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte and, first of all, the famouse film of Cenerentolawith
Abbado and Pannelle) realized by the most important theatres and Festival such as
La Scala, Royal Opera House-Covent Garden and Glynderbourne Festival.
He is the conductor of several italian and foreign orchestras, he guided the Progetto
Mozart-Da Ponte: an intense training work by the music school in Fiesole from1988
to 1990, that has come to an end with the staging of Così fan tutte, Le nozze di
Figaro and Don Giovanni.
From 1993 to 1996 he guided the workshop about the Monteverdi’s vocality and the
preparation of Incoronazione di Poppea, Orfeo and Il ritorno di Ulisse in patria.
In 1992 he conducted La scala di seta and L’occasione fa il ladro with the Hampe’s
production in Montpèllier. The same year he conducted Falstaff and La pietra del
paragone and several symphonic concerts by Aldeburgh Festival.
In 1994 he conducted and performed Il maestro di capella, Il telefono and La vox
humaine for Roberto De Simone’s direction.
From 1991 to 1997 he was the main conductor at the Teatro Verdi in Pisa, where he
conducted La Cenerentola, La Pietra del paragone, recorded for Nuova Era, Rigoletto,Falstaff, La
Traviata, Macbeth and Carmen.
In 1995 he made the opening of the Orffiane celebrations and conducted the Carmina
Burana with the direction and the choreography of Mich von Hoecke.
In the same years he conducted a new production of Il Signor Bruschino and La scala
di seta at the Theatre of Bilbao, Carmen in Rouen and Don Giovanni at Opera of Marseille.
In 1998 he has made the opening of the Filarmonica dell’Arena’s symphonic season
in Verona performing Mozart.
In 2001 he conducted Tout Rossini at Opéra Comique in Paris, La finta giardiniera in
Nice, Il barbiere di Seviglia in Baltimora and Montecarlo.
Among the prestigious charges that Desderi holded, the most important are the following:
artistic direction of Teatro Verdi in Pisa from 1991 to 1997 and Teatro Regio di
Torino from 1998 to 2001, artistic advice of Verdi Festival in Parma and the intendence
of Teatro Massimo in Palermo.
