Santiago Serrate (Sabadell, 1975) began his musical education at the Conservatoire Superior of Barcelona where he studied double bass, piano and composition. He was also for a double bass pupil of Ludwig Streicher at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid where in 1998 he was awarded a diploma (presented by H.M. the Queen) for the most dedicated student of his year. He studied conducting with Antoni Ros Marbà and in master classes with Arturo Tamayo, Salvador Mas, George Hurst and with Otto-Werner Mueller.

He made his debut as a conductor at the age of 16 with the San Agustín boy’s chorus of which he was a member and later official pianist/organist. He also won the first prize in Double bass at the "Germans Claret" strings competition, playing as a soloist the double bass concerti of D. Dragonetti and G. Bottesini. He has been member of the National Youth Orchestra of Spain, the Youth Orchestra of Catalonia, the RIAS Youth Orchestra of Berlin and the Spanish RTV Symphony Orchestra. In 2001 after a conducting competition he was appointed assistant conductor of the Madrid State Youth Orchestra for two seasons.

He conducts the most important sapanish orchestras frequently and also in Portugal, Greece, Italy, China and México. His compromise with the contemporany music is very strong with concerts, recordings and premières with the Modus Novus an the Sax Ensemble.

In the Operatic world he has conducted in the Gran Teatro del Liceu, Barcelona with L’Ape Musicale, in the Galicias's Auditorium with Poulenc's La Voix Humaine, in Mallorca's Teatre Principal with Puccini's Turandot, in the Teatro de la Zarzuela, Madrid with La Calesera and El Estreno de una Artista/Gloria y Peluca, in Opera for Catalonia with Rossini's Italiana in Algeri, Pergolesi's La Serva Padrona and Wolf-Ferrari's il Segreto di Susanna, Bizet's Carmen and in the Teatro de la Maestranza, Sevilla with Lo Speziale by J.Haydn, Der Schauspieldirektor by Mozart, The Telephone by Menotti, Cavalleria Rusticana by Mascagni, la Fille du Régiment by Donizetti, Cristoforo Colombo by Carnicer and the first Spanish Performances of il Prigioniero by Dallapiccola and Sarka by Janacek with a great succes. Recently, he had conducted the world first performance of Tomás Marco's chamber opera TENORIO in the El Escorial Music Festival.

In his opera repertoire are more than 60 different tittles working closely with artist like P. Domigo, J. Kaufmann, J. Pons, A. Arteta, D. Zajic, D Dessí, F. Armiliato, S. Radvanovsky, C. Álvarez, L. Nucci, M. Guleghina, E. Herlitzius, M. Volle, F, Cedolins, P. Yende, M. Orán, C. Chausson and G. Kunde among others. He had been worked as assitant of Pedro Halffter, Antoni Ros Marbà, Guillermo García Calvo, Giacomo Sagripanti, Pinchas Steinberg and Michel Plasson in different projects.

He teaches in the "Antoni Ros Marbà" international orchestral conducting course and is also musical director and patron of the Sax Ensemble Foundation.
